DESCRIPTION:WELLNESS GROUP \nPracticing Hope: Countering the Demoralization of Aging Monday\, July 11\, 12 pm EDT \nAging brings an accumulation of pains\, disabilities\, threats from disease\, traumas to bear and losses to mourn. Yet\, study after study shows that the elderly throughout the world report greater well-being than their teen-age or mid-life counterparts. Sustaining a posture of hope\, rather than falling into despair\, is key to well-being as one ages. As a psychiatric educator\, James L. Griffith (’13) has translated psychological and neuroscience research into practical\, teachable methods for helping patients and families sustain a posture of hope despite ongoing threats\, losses and stressors that may be uncontrollable. Griffith will describe how hope is best regarded as a practice: “something you do” rather than “something you feel.” \nGriffith is professor and chair in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the GWU School of Medicine and Health Sciences. As a psychiatric educator\, he developed the GWU psychiatry residency training\, distinguished for its excellence in cultural psychiatry\, global mental health and psychosocial care for medically ill patients. \nMarcel I. DESCRIPTION:  \nSHAKESPEARE GROUP \nRed Velvet: In 1833 an African American Actor Plays Othello in London Friday\, July 8\, 12 pm Rescheduled from June 24 \nIra Aldridge\, an African-American actor married to an Englishwoman\, performed the title role in Othello at Covent Garden in 1833 – the year that Parliament abolished slavery. Aldridge was the first non-White actor to play the role. Based on his reputation in provincial English theaters\, he was chosen to substitute for Edmund Kean\, after the latter’s on-stage collapse. Aldridge had worked with the famous African Company in New York\, which faced riots when it performed Shakespeare. Unable to achieve a classical acting career in America\, Aldridge sailed for England in 1824. \nThe play Red Velvet\, which opened at the Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC) in DC in June\, begins when a much-aged Aldridge discusses his long\, brilliant career but also the deep wounds made by the social injustices he suffered. The play\, written by Lolita Chakrabarti and including the performance of scenes from Othello\, first opened in 2012 in London with Adrian Lester in the title role. \nLeeAnét Noble\, director of equity and enrichment at STC\, and Drew Lichtenberg\, dramaturg at STC\, will discuss Red Velvet in a conversation format. Noble is an internationally critically acclaimed choreographer\, director\, performer and writer. Lichtenberg has worked on more than 50 productions\, numerous world premieres and over half the plays in the Shakespeare canon. \nElizabeth Crompton (’02) Shakespeare Group \nServed lunch at noon. DESCRIPTION:LIBRARY COMMITTEE \nWhat Are We Reading? Tuesday\, July 5\, 1 pm EDT \nRuth McDiarmid (’06) will present Pultizer Prize winner Kazuo Ichiguro’s novel Klara and the Sun. Best known for his novels Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go\, Ichiguro explores human failing and fragility\, along with the inevitability of death. In July’s book\, he tells the story of Klara\, a solar-powered robot designed to be an Artificial Friend (AF) to a human child\, that was purchased to supply companionship to Josie\, a teenager bedridden with an unspecified fatal disease. Klara is exceptionally bright and observant\, but doesn’t realize that Josie’s mother intends to relocate Klara’s intelligence in a new Artificial Friend embodying Josie after she dies. \nPatricia Nicoson will discuss Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. Wilkerson\, the first African American to win the Pulitzer award for journalism\, seeks to broaden our understanding of social and economic inequality by using the concept of caste to explain it. Caste\, she argues\, is an artificial hierarchy that aids in the determination of standing and respect\, of assumptions about beauty and competence and even of who deserves the benefits of doubts and access to resources. She looks at the caste systems in the US\, India and Nazi Germany\, with special attention devoted to how the Nazis copied aspects of the American structure of segregation. \nJoe Page (’04) Library Committee
