SUMMARY:Shakespeare Group - Craig Wallace & Kimberly Schraf
DESCRIPTION:  \nSHAKESPEARE GROUP & COSMOS THEATRE \nGloucester’s Tragedy in King Lear Friday\, March 17\, 12 pm \nThe Shakespeare Theatre Company will present King Lear in February/March\, the second play this season directed by Simon Godwin. In the Quarto\, the play is titled as a “history” and in the Folio\, as a “tragedy.” Among the wealth of distinctive characters with which Shakespeare populates the play\, the towering tragedies of Lear and Gloucester take center stage. \nCraig Wallace will discuss the production\, in which he plays the tragic role of Gloucester\, who is blinded by Regan and her husband the Duke of Cornwall. Accompanying Wallace will be Kimberly Schraf\, who has played the role of Gloucester in another production. The two actors will analyze Gloucester’s character and the challenges of playing the role. \nWallace is a frequent actor in productions at the Folger and Shakespeare Theatres. He has also worked at many area theaters\, including Fords\, Round House\, Woolly Mammoth and Arena. Wallace has taught Shakespeare for actors at Howard and modern acting at George Mason\, both for several years. He has a BFA from Howard and an MFA from Penn State\, plus training at the National Theatre in London.  Schraf is a veteran of 15 years of book narration and 17 years as an actor\, and has also taught at the Theatre Lab\, which offers theater instruction to adults. She graduated from St. John’s College in Annapolis. \nElizabeth Crompton (’02) Shakespeare Group \nServed lunch at noon. Price: $28.

SUMMARY:Library Committee - Marie Yovanovitch Hybrid Event
DESCRIPTION:  Photo by Jennifer Watkins \nLIBRARY & INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEES \nLessons from the Edge Thursday\, March 16\, 6:30 pm (presentation at 8 pm EDT; time subject to change) \n**Updated 3/3/23: This event will now take place in-person and virtually over Zoom.** \nIt may be hard to recall that Ukraine was often in the US news before Russia invaded the country in February 2022. Just three years ago\, Trump’s impeachment scandal related to Ukraine was making headlines. This story plays out in Lessons from the Edge: A Memoir by Marie Yovanovitch\, former US ambassador to Ukraine\, who with little explanation was abruptly removed in the middle of the night from that post by the Trump administration. Her efforts to fight corruption and support good governance in Ukraine eventually came out in her 2019 testimony before the House Intelligence Committee impeachment inquiry. \nMuch of Yovanovitch’s 30-year state department career centered on the post-Soviet world. In addition to her post in Ukraine\, Yovanovitch was US ambassador in the Republic of Armenia and the Kyrgyz Republic. Prior to those posts\, she served in Moscow\, London\, Ottawa and Mogadishu and held senior posts domestically. She was dean of the School of Language Studies at the Foreign Service Institute\, principal deputy assistant secretary for the state department’s Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs\, where she coordinated policy on European and global security issues\, and deputy commandant and international advisor at the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy\, National Defense University. \nA member of the senior foreign service\, Yovanovitch received multiple awards. Today she is senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and non-resident fellow at Georgetown’s Institute for the Study of Diplomacy. \nThe evening’s program will be moderated by William Courtney (’14)\, former US ambassador to Kazakhstan and Georgia. \nMarguerite Sullivan (’07) Library Committee \nCocktails at 6:30 pm; dinner at 7 pm; presentation at 8 pm EDT (time subject to change). Price: $50.

SUMMARY:American History Study Group - Jon Grinspan Rescheduled
DESCRIPTION:  \nAMERICAN HISTORY STUDY GROUP \nAmerican Politics Tuesday\, March 14\, 12 pm \n**Updated 3/16/23: This event has been rescheduled to Monday\, April 17.** \nReformers have often criticized American politics for its low citizen turnout in presidential elections\, lack of citizen interest and involvement and domination by elites. Surprisingly\, for much of American history none of these conditions prevailed. Voter interest and turnout for elections were extremely high\, politics was a game in which people participated heavily and everybody understood the rules of the game. The results of this style of politics was not necessarily welcomed. As Jon Grinspan shows in his new book The Age of Acrimony: How Americans Fought to Fix Their Democracy\, 1865-1915\, Americans revolted against the political system that prevailed after the Civil War and substituted a wholly different style of politics in the early 20th century. \nGrinspan is a senior curator at National Museum of American History and is the author of several books on American history and politics. \nServed lunch at noon. Price: $28.

SUMMARY:Program Committee - Mary Bogle\, George Jones\, Scott Kratz\, Dionne Bussey-Reeder & Tiffany Williams
DESCRIPTION:Mary Bogle\nGeorge Jones\nScott Kratz\nDionne Bussey-Reeder\nTiffany Williams\n\n\n\n PROGRAM COMMITTEE Alleviating Poverty Series \nAlleviating Poverty: The Universal Basic Income Approach Monday\, March 13\, 6:30 pm \nCould a “universal basic income” help win the battle against poverty in America? In the first of a three-part series of Club programs on strategies to reduce poverty\, five experts will discuss the innovative “THRIVE East of the River\,” a program similar in concept to universal basic income\, which was piloted in DC at the beginning of the pandemic. Four leading non-profits – Bread for the City\, Building Bridges Across the River\, Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative and Martha’s Table – created and implemented THRIVE in service to Ward 8\, where most residents are Black and one-third of families have incomes below the federal poverty line. Direct cash payments of $5\,500 and other assistance were provided to more than six hundred families. The payments – perhaps the largest privately funded cash relief payment ever offered in the US – were unconditional: recipients chose where to direct the support\, typically among food\, health\, housing and job training. The organizations asked a senior research team at the Urban Institute to follow THRIVE and provide an assessment. The institute concluded that THRIVE “show[ed] special promise as an equitable means of assisting families of color. . . disproportionately affected by health and economic hardships during times of crisis.” \nMary Bogle of the Urban Institute will lead a discussion of THRIVE and its outcomes with the partnership’s principals: George Jones (Bread for the City)\, Scott Kratz (Building Bridges Across the River)\, Dionne Bussey-Reeder (Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative) and Tiffany Williams (Martha’s Table). \nPaul Eckert (’17) Program Committee \nCocktails at 6:30 pm; dinner at 7 pm. SUMMARY:Science & Technology Committee - Cass R. Sunstein
DESCRIPTION:  \nSCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE \nNudge: Past\, Present and Future Friday\, March 10\, 6:30 pm \nSince the 2008 publication of Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health\, Wealth\, and Happiness\, the term “nudge” has entered the vocabulary of businesspeople\, policy makers\, engaged citizens and consumers everywhere and given rise to more than 400 “nudge units” in governments around the world. The book explores thoughtful “choice architecture” – a concept Cass R. Sunstein and Richard Thaler invented – to help us make better decisions for ourselves\, our families and our society. \nIn 2021\, the authors updated the book\, based on experiences in and out of government in the intervening years as well as an explosion of new research in numerous academic disciplines. They offer new insights about a wide variety of issues\, including Covid-19\, health\, personal finance\, retirement savings\, medical care\, climate change and “sludge” (paperwork and other nuisances that we don’t want and that keep us from getting what we do want)\, all while honoring one of the cardinal rules of nudging: make it fun. \nSunstein\, currently a Harvard professor and founder and director of the program on behavioral economics and public policy at Harvard Law\, has spent his career working at the intersection of science\, technology and policy. In 2018\, he received the Holberg Prize\, sometimes described as the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for law and the humanities. He has been administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs and has advised officials at the UN\, European Commission and World Bank on issues of law and public policy. \nCelia Merzbacher (’19) Science & Technology Committee \nCocktails at 6:30 pm; dinner at 7 pm. SUMMARY:Education Group - Dick Jung Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:EDUCATION GROUP \nAn Uncommon Academic Wednesday\, March 8\, 12 pm EST \nDick Jung (’96) is now an emeritus head of school\, board leader and consultant for charter and independent schools as well a former high school English teacher and policy analyst for the department of education. His new multimedia biography\, Michael Kirst: An Uncommon Academic\, reveals an accomplished career\, in and out of government\, of a man who has made\, and continues to make\, a big impact on public schools in and beyond California. \nUsing audio and video clips from the online version of the book\, Jung will explore: 1) What makes Kirst “an uncommon academic”? 2) What might Kirst teach us about education reforms that stick? 3) What makes this biography uncommon as well? \nKirst is considered “the father” of California’s Local Control Funding Formula\, a 2013 financing and governance law that he helped conceive as a Stanford emeritus professor and then implement as president of the state board of education. This major school reform\, still in place today\, represents a capstone of Kirst’s six decades in academia and public policy\, starting with his role in the Johnson administration. Jung’s biography offers new insights into the genesis of this and other education initiatives spawned by Kirst and his extensive web of colleagues and proteges. \nJung received his doctorate from Stanford\, where he was the teaching assistant for Kirst’s politics of education course as Proposition 13 hit California. Jung earned his BA from U Missouri-St. Louis\, where he was recently honored with its 2022 distinguished alumni award. \nJulia V. Clark (’13) Education Group

SUMMARY:Program Committee - Maria Manuela Goyanes
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM COMMITTEE \nTheater Industry and Culture Tuesday\, March 7\, 6:30 pm \nFor the past 40 years\, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company has been known for productions that are edgy\, challenging\, thought-provoking and contemporary\, among them The Peculiar Patriot (2019)\, a personable take on our prison system; recent sell-out hits Ain’t No Mo and Just for Us\, which addressed race and antisemitism\, respectively\, and A Strange Loop\, an absorbing musical about a Black queer man aspiring to write a musical. \nMaria Manuela Goyanes had been artistic director of Woolly for just 18 months when the pandemic hit. Undaunted\, she determined to find a young actor for the production she planned to mount after Covid\, A Strange Loop\, and succeeded. In December 2021\, Jaquel Spivey\, just 23\, opened in Michael R. Jackson’s brilliant play to rave reviews. Within months A Strange Loop had moved to Broadway and would earn a Tony Award for best musical. \nGoyanes believes audiences look to theater to help them understand the world. Her vision for Woolly is to tackle social issues head on with plays that sometimes make audiences uncomfortable but can also make them laugh. She will address the state of our theater industry\, how our culture is changing and the reasons that the theater scene in DC is one of the most dynamic and vibrant in the country. \nBefore joining Woolly\, Goyanes\, a first generation Latina-American\, was director of producing and artistic planning at the Public Theater in New York\, where she oversaw many successes including Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton. \nKaren Thomas (’17) Program Committee \nCocktails at 6:30 pm; dinner at 7 pm. SUMMARY:Library Committee - What Are We Reading? Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:LIBRARY COMMITTEE \nWhat Are We Reading? Tuesday\, March 7\, 1 pm EST \nShortly after 1960\, when seventeen former African colonies gained independence\, African intellectual and political classes launched a campaign to force the repatriation of cultural property removed during the colonial era and held by western museums. Susan Noel Rudy (’16) will present Africa’s Struggle for Its Art: History of a Postcolonial Defeat\, in which French scholar Bénédicte Savoy identifies pivotal events in this lengthy\, still ongoing story. \nSavoy discusses the evolution of the arguments against repatriation mounted by European museums following a UN resolution on the subject in 1960 and a landmark appeal to the General Assembly by the Zairean president in 1973. She also traces the museums’ increasingly unsuccessful efforts to construct political and bureaucratic barriers to the return of cultural property to its country of origin. \nSally Mulhern (’00) will introduce journalist Jonathan Freedland’s chilling account of how the story of Auschwitz’s horrors first reached a wide audience. The Escape Artist: The Man Who Broke Out of Auschwitz to Warn the World is the chronicle of the young Slovakian Jew who escaped from the notorious concentration camp and tried to convince the Allies and what remained of organized Jewry in Europe to take steps to resist. The book documents the disbelief and doubt that greeted his report about the holocaust when there was still time to save hundreds of thousands of lives. \nJoe Page (’04) Library Committee

SUMMARY:Climate Change Mitigation & Adaptation Group - Michael McDonald
DESCRIPTION:CLIMATE MITIGATION & ADAPTION\, ECONOMICS AND NATURAL RESOURCES GROUPS \nDecarbonization of Resilient American Communities Tuesday\, March 7\, 12 pm \nMichael McDonald (’99) will discuss decarbonization efforts by Resilient American Communities (RAC)\, a unity effort supporting the growth of American communities striving for greater social equity while advancing their resilience and regeneration living within the carrying capacities of their bio-regional and local ecosystems. There are now more than eight hundred fifty RAC sites across the US. Support for this effort is being provided in part by federal funds\, which will be further augmented by the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law\, which are designed to provide hundreds of billions of dollars toward climate change management\, decarbonization\, development of renewable energy and the advancement of the GreenBlue circular economy\, with 40 percent of the benefits going toward the White House Justice 40 communities. \nMcDonald is the coordinator of RAC and the Alliance for Global Resilience and Regeneration\, doing affiliated work overseas. He coordinated the National Health Information Infrastructure Consortium while he was managing the Koop Foundation with the former US surgeon general\, including serving as principal investigator for investing $50 million in advanced technology programs. After taking Health Central public while serving as its founding chairman\, McDonald set up more than a hundred sixty resilience systems and resilience networks in the US and around the world\, often during and after events of mass consequence. He is currently focused on the advancement of distributed collectively intelligent grids\, that can operate during and after central grid failures\, replacing dependence on antiquated centralized fossil fuel-dependent electrical grids with decarbonized\, renewable energy systems. \nServed lunch at noon. SUMMARY:International Affairs Committee - Mahinda Samarasinghe
DESCRIPTION:INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE \nSri Lanka at 75 – Relations with US and the World Monday\, March 6\, 6:30 pm \nSince independence in 1948\, Sri Lanka has had a strong\, vibrant and multi-faceted relationship with the US. This relationship has steadily developed over the past seven and a half decades and Sri Lanka looks to further strengthen ties for our mutual benefit. The relationship is based on shared values\, a common commitment to representative democracy\, human rights and the rule of law and mutual respect. \nDuring the past 75 years\, Sri Lanka has faced and weathered many challenges including relations with world powers. Relationship with China has generated significant controversy. Some view the ballooning debt owed to China for infrastructure project as a debt-trap. \nMahinda Samarasinghe\, Sri Lanka’s ambassador to the US\, will discuss his country’s relations with US and the world. Samarasinghe started his career in Sri Lanka’s foreign service at a relatively junior level and rose to serve as the counsellor to the permanent mission of Sri Lanka to the UN in Geneva. While serving in Geneva\, he was tasked with representing the country at several international organizations\, including the International Labor Organization\, World Health Organization\, UN Children’s Fund\, International Telecommunication Union and the World Meteorological Organization. \nTo serve his country\, Samarasinghe entered electoral politics and was elected to the country’s parliament and then served as a cabinet minister. Over the years\, he held a number of important portfolios\, including chair of the Parliamentary Sub-Committee on Fundamental Rights\, Language and Citizenship Rights. A graduate of La Trove University\, Melbourne\, Samarasinghe has championed human rights as part of his public service. \nC. SUMMARY:Wellness Group - Alex Wood
DESCRIPTION:WELLNESS GROUP \nHealth Care beyond Hospitals Monday\, March 6\, 12 pm \nAlex Wood\, a hospital discharge planner\, will discuss and demystify what goes on following hospital discharge. Federal law requires that patients have a safe plan in place following discharge. These plans are handled by care management departments staffed by nurses or social workers. These professionals take into consideration patients’ desire for enduring care\, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation\, that the patient has made known prior to\, or during\, hospitalization. Often\, patients have executed a power of attorney for health matters (similar to those for financial matters) should they become unable to make such decisions for themselves. \nSpecific discharge plans may involve home care\, rehabilitation therapy\, need for durable medical equipment\, need for a temporary caregiver and need for subsequent living and continuing care arrangements. Wood will discuss the various post-hospital options that are available\, their cost and how to plan for their eventual need. He will explore the availability of insurance options and the various governmental programs that exist. \nHe will talk about long-term care facilities\, assisted living\, memory facilities\, continuing care facilities\, palliative care and hospice care. Wood will spend some time discussing various senior living facilities\, both for those leaving hospital care and those who become in need of a supervised environment. He will even address how to get a patient home from the hospital\, as transportation is often a problem. \nServed lunch at noon. Price: $28.

These include planetary exploration in our own solar system and exciting new discoveries about our galaxy\, the Milky Way\, and the broader universe beyond. AAS's annual conference takes place in January each year\, and so he will be brimming over with the very latest astronomy news. \nMarvel has been with AAS since 1998. As a practicing research astronomer\, his specialty has been stellar radio astronomy. This has included work by means of very long baseline interferometry at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Before joining AAS\, he graduated from the U of Arizona and obtained a PhD at New Mexico State. \nRobert Hershey (’03) Science Group \nServed lunch at 11:30 am. Price: $28.
