SUMMARY:[NEW] International Affairs Committee - Paul Schmit
DESCRIPTION:INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE \nAn Extraordinary Luxembourg Diplomat Monday August 8\, 5 pm \nPaul Schmit\, Luxembourg’s ambassador to Poland since 2020\, will discuss his book An Outstanding Luxembourg Diplomat\, which describes the extraordinary life of late ambassador Hugues Las Gallais during the turmoil of World War II. This informative work (published in French in 2019 and released in English translation in 2021) includes a reference to the Cosmos Club. Several pages in the book detail the interactions between Sumner Welles and Gallais. (Welles\, the second husband of Mathilde Townsend\, inherited the mansion that later became the Club’s home.) \nThe book describes the life of a diplomat who represented Luxembourg’s interests in Washington\, a diplomatic post of key importance for Luxembourg\, particularly during the World War II. During the period when the Grand Duchy was occupied by the Nazi invaders\, Gallais was successful in bringing Grand Duchess Charlotte and her ministers to America and keeping the Luxembourg cause alive. The phrase “put Luxembourg on the map” is attributed to him. \nSchmit studied law at the University of Strasbourg and political science at Paris 2 University. After his studies\, he joined the Luxembourg civil service\, first in the Ministry of Defence (1991-1992)\, then in the Foreign Ministry\, where he has served since 1992. He has completed several overseas assignments\, including in Brussels (permanent representations to NATO and to the European Union)\, Washington and Lisbon. At one point\, he served as deputy chief of mission\, Luxembourg Embassy in Washington. \nC. Naseer Ahmad (’13) International Affairs Committee \nMembers may sign a chit for drinks to accompany the complimentary cheese tray. No charge for the lecture. Those wishing to dine after the program need to make a separate dinner reservation. \nProof of vaccination required for all attendees. \nReserve online or with Member Services at memberservices@cosmosclub.org or call 202-797-6443.

SUMMARY:Library Committee - What Are We Reading? Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:LIBRARY COMMITTEE \nWhat Are We Reading? Tuesday\, August 2\, 1 pm EDT \nPaul Shiffman (’06) will present Catherine Belton’s Putin’s People: How the KGB Took Back Russia and Then Took on the West. Published in 2020\, Putin’s People is the riveting account of the life of Vladimir Putin\, his career as a KGB operative and Vice Mayor of St. Petersburg and his rise to total power in Russia. Its particular focus is on how he and his acolytes\, mostly from the Soviet intelligence community\, funneled money abroad as the USSR collapsed\, brought it back into the new Russia and used it to build their own financial empires in a new form of what author Belton calls “KGB capitalism.” How Putin dealt with his political opponents\, as well as supporters who ran afoul of him\, forms a major part of this well-documented thriller. \nSusan Fifer Canby’s (’08) choice is Robert Kolker’s Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family. The book tells the true story of an American family with twelve children\, six of whom were afflicted with schizophrenia. It was one of the first families whose DNA and life experiences formed the basis of a study by the National Institute of Mental Health and formed the cornerstone of research into this mental disease in the mid-20th century. The book is part medical detective story and part heart-rending family drama. \nJoe Page (’04) Library Committee \nClick the link below to join the Zoom meeting https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81688802635?pwd=dEZUK21xMzdNcHByek1Jelk4MXR6UT09 \nMeeting ID: 816 8880 2635 Passcode: 425885 \nOne tap mobile +13126266799\,\,81688802635# US (Chicago) +16469313860\,\,81688802635# US \nDial by your location +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 646 931 3860 US +1 929 205 6099 US (New York) +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 669 444 9171 US +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) Meeting ID: 816 8880 2635 Find your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kcBoPWNi8z \n  \ntg

SUMMARY:Art Committee - Dennis Gurtz\, Ralph Ehrenberg & Don Hawkins
DESCRIPTION:Dennis Gurtz\nRalph Ehrenberg\nDon Hawkins\n\n\n\nART COMMITTEE \nDC History through Historic Maps Friday\, July 29\, 12 pm \nCollector Dennis Gurtz (’08)\, Ralph Ehrenberg (’11) and Don Hawkins (’04) will explore early Washington\, DC\, as related by the 18th and 19th century maps and art on display in the Crentz Room. \nThis exhibition features select maps and artworks from Gurtz’s collection which provide a pictorial history of the District of Columbia from the 1790s through the Civil War. These works—many of them rare or unique—depict the original conceptualization of the “Federal City\,” the dramatic Burning of Washington in 1814\, the architectural importance of the Capitol Building and other monuments\, and the city’s role as a hub of Union Army activity. \nEhrenberg\, who during his career directed first the Cartographic Archives Division of the National Archives and then the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress\, will provide an overview of the maps on display within the broader context of mapping the early Federal city. \nHawkins\, formerly chairman of the Committee of 100 on the Federal City\, who some years ago curated the long-term exhibition at the National Building Museum\, Washington: Symbol and City\, will discuss how the maps reflect changes to what initially\, based on the Residency Act of 1790\, was the 10-mile-square Federal District. \nGurtz\, a former president of the Washington Map Society\, and current chair of the steering Committee of the Philip Lee Phillips Society that supports the work of the Map Division at the Library of Congress\, will describe how he became a collector and point to significant and favorite items chosen for the exhibit. \nServed lunch at noon. Price: $24. Proof of vaccination required for all attendees. \nReserve online or with Member Services at memberservices@cosmosclub.org or call 202-797-6443.

SUMMARY:Medieval Interest Group
DESCRIPTION:MEDIEVAL INTEREST GROUP \nPilgrimage and the Camino de Santiago: History to Recent Experiences Thursday\, July 28\, 12 pm \nThe July session will focus on medieval pilgrimage\, especially on the Camino de Santiago\, also known as the Way of St. James. For centuries\, pilgrims have traveled the Camino to the shrine of St. James at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Iberia. The route remains popular today for those on foot\, on bicycles and even on horseback. \nThe meeting will begin with a short overview of the legendary network of pilgrimage routes in medieval Europe. Many of these routes led to three destinations: Jerusalem\, Rome and Santiago de Compostela. Why does Santiago figure so prominently on this list? What are the roots of the Camino\, and how did Santiago become a main destination site? Clues exist. The Codex Calixtinus\, a 12th century medieval guide\, describes the primary routes in France and Spain that medieval pilgrims journeyed\, revealing to its readers the political and religious agenda behind the undertaking. Some pilgrims set out for spiritual reasons; others for adventure\, only to find the camaraderie of other pilgrims\, attending masses in churches\, monasteries\, and cathedrals – not to mention the beauty of the Galician countryside – moving. \nAfter the presentation and informal conversation over lunch\, those who have spent time on the Camino will be invited to share their stories and experiences prior to a more general discussion of the subject. Members and guests are invited to learn about the Camino and its stories. \nServed lunch at noon. Price: $27. Proof of vaccination required for all attendees. \nReserve online or with Member Services at memberservices@cosmosclub.org or call 202-797-6443.

SUMMARY:[NEW] Science & Technology Committee - Jay Van Bavel Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE \nThe Cost of Polarization in a Pandemic Tuesday\, July 26\, 12 pm EDT \nTo mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic catastrophe\, the major public health response has required massive collective behavior change – especially at the national level. Facing resistance to change\, the US has suffered over 1 million deaths due to the pandemic. Jay Van Bavel\, associate professor of psychology and neural science at NYU\, will present several recent studies on the role of polarization in the pandemic. His research suggests that polarization has characterized every stage of the pandemic in the US from initial risk perceptions to movement patterns to vaccination rates. He will describe the factors underlying this polarized response to the pandemic and how it might have been avoided. \nVan Bavel is also director of the Social Identity & Morality Lab and co-author of The Power of Us. His BA is from the U of Alberta and his PhD from U of Toronto. He held a postdoctoral fellowship at OSU. From neurons to social networks\, Van Bavel’s research examines how collective concerns – group identities\, moral values and political beliefs – shape the mind\, brain and behavior. His work addresses issues of group identity\, social motivation\, cooperation\, implicit bias\, moral judgment and social media. He studies these issues using a combination of neuroimaging\, lesion patients\, social cognition\, behavioral economics\, global surveys and computational social science. \nWith more than a hundred academic publications to his name\, he has written for major newspapers\, been featured in TEDx and TED-ED videos\, and consulted for the White House\, UN\, EU and WHO. He has received numerous awards for his work in social psychology and also received the Golden Dozen Teaching Award from NYU. \nMichael Tanner (’13) is the program moderator. \nClick the link below to join the Zoom meeting https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82179799426?pwd=WEtnTCtVbXJiYXhWZUowUnVzMmVyQT09 \nMeeting ID: 821 7979 9426 Passcode: 649110 \nOne tap mobile +19292056099\,\,82179799426# US (New York) +13017158592\,\,82179799426# US (Washington DC) \nDial by your location +1 929 205 6099 US (New York) +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) Meeting ID: 821 7979 9426 Find your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/knqsnSsI9 \n  \nhm

SUMMARY:Wine Group
DESCRIPTION:WINE APPRECIATION TASTING \nWine and Food from Washington State Tuesday\, July 19\, 6:15 pm \nWashington is the second largest wine-producing state in the US. The Seattle area and Olympic Peninsula have a very wet climate\, not particularly suited for wine grapes. The climate east of the Cascades Mountains is much drier and sunnier and is home to the bulk of Washington’s wine production. Washington’s latitude is similar to many wine-producing areas in France\, and consequently it tends to produce wines closer to the style to French wines than many of the more fruit-forward California wines\, which are influenced by the warmer California weather. The northwest’s history of volcanic activity and epic floods left multiple soil types well-suited to wine grapes. Columbia River\, the fourth largest in the US\, provides the principal source of irrigation. \nWhile Washington’s neighbor Oregon is famous for its pinot noirs\, this variety has traditionally not done well Washington. Washington’s top five varieties are cabernet sauvignon\, chardonnay\, riesling\, merlot and syrah. \nWashington’s iconic food is salmon. Salmon from Washington\, Canada and Alaska are sold and tossed about in Seattle’s famous Pike Place Market. Washington is also known for its fruit production\, including apples\, Rainier cherries and a variety of berries. The July Wine Appreciation Tasting will include a cross-section of Washington wines paired with appropriate food selections typical of the region. \nFormat: For the Wine Appreciation Tastings\, only tasting-size samples are poured of each of the selected wines. In fairness to all participants and the staff\, attendees will be offered not more than that amount and only a single pour. In the unlikely event that any wine is left at the end of the tasting\, attendees will be given the opportunity to help themselves. \nStarter wine at 6:15 pm; tasting and food at 6:30 pm. Limit of sixty-four with three guests per reservation. Price: $65. Proof of vaccination required for all attendees.

SUMMARY:LGBT & Allies - Stuart Sotsky
DESCRIPTION:LGBT & ALLIES \nA Psychiatrist’s Career Tuesday\, July 19\, 12 pm \nWhen Stuart Sotsky began his medical training\, being identified as gay could cripple careers or end them. His work as a psychiatrist during the AIDS plague in the 1980s led him to come-out to the medical community. Since then\, locally as well as nationally\, he has become an eloquent advocate for LGBT issues in academic\, government\, community and religious settings. During his career\, public attitudes toward psychiatry and homosexuality have changed dramatically. He will discuss how being a gay man has complicated and directed his career as a psychiatrist. \nStotsky earned his BA\, MD and MPH degrees at Johns Hopkins. He completed his training in psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. In 1977\, he joined the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at GWU School of Medicine. During his decades-long connection with the department\, he taught and mentored generations of medical students and psychiatry residents. \nA career highlight came in 1980\, when he became a principal investigator in a landmark National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) research project comparing psychotherapeutic approaches to depression. His work with another NIMH task force helped bring about  mental health parity: equal insurance coverage for psychiatric illnesses and non-psychiatric ones. \nSotsky has been a leader in the Association of Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists. He is a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the American College of Psychiatrists. \nBrian B. Doyle (’01) LGBT & Allies \nServed lunch at noon. Price: $24. Proof of vaccination required for all attendees.

SUMMARY:Clubhouse Tour Sold Out
DESCRIPTION:CLUBHOUSE TOUR \nExplore the Club’s Elegant Home Saturday\, July 16\, 12:30 pm \nIf you missed visiting the clubhouse during the COVID closedown\, the Club docents are providing an excellent opportunity for you to re-acquaint yourself with the public rooms and to see some of the behind-the-scenes areas. The 124-year-old Beaux Arts Mansion has been home to the Cosmos Club for 70 years (see pages 27-30 of the July/August Bulletin). In 1898\, society doyenne Mary Scott Townsend acquired the small brick home that Judge Curtis Hillyer had built in 1873 and transformed it into a lavish architectural show place\, designed by the leading architects John Merven Carrére (CC: 1905-11) and Thomas Hastings. The Mansion underwent extensive renovations after the Club acquired it in 1950\, to replace the former clubhouse on Lafayette Square. \nThe program begins with a luncheon at 12:30 pm\, which includes a media presentation that traces the history of the Club and the Mansion. After lunch\, the walking tour will explore the Mansion’s four floors\, including the spectacularly renovated award-winning Warne Ballroom\, as well as the Annex and the Hillyer House with its business center. Participants will also see representative overnight guest rooms\, two kitchens\, the exercise facility\, meeting rooms\, as well as the Billiard and Writer’s Rooms. The newly renovated downstairs spaces have been added to the tour. \nThe tour concludes by 3:30 pm with champagne and an opportunity for questions and conversation. \nServed lunch at 12:30 pm. Price: $25. Proof of vaccination required for all attendees.

SUMMARY:Civil War Group - Chris Kolakowski Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:CIVIL WAR GROUP \n1862 Virginia Battles Friday\, July 15\, 12 pm EDT \nCivil War military history continues to hold interest. The war began in April 1861 and didn’t conclude until 1865. Initially\, the Confederacy more than held its own\, with much of 1862 a time of continued Confederate successes – until the September Maryland Battle of Antietam. Fighting was especially significant in the Virginia Peninsula as General McClellan attempted to advance to the northwest to take Richmond\, in the Shenandoah Valley where Stonewall Jackson scored victories\, and at Second Manassas/Bull Run. The Virginia campaigns involved fighting on a scale never before seen in American military history. \nFor an overview\, including a description of the personalities of the key generals\, Chris Kolakowski (’19)\, director of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum in Madison\, will share insights gained while writing his 2016 history\, The Virginia Campaigns. Other of his publications include The Civil War at Perryville: Battling for the Bluegrass\, The Stones River and Tullahoma Campaign: This Army Does Not Retreat and Last Stand on Bataan. \nBorn and raised in Fredericksburg\, VA\, Kolakowski began his career as a military historian while employed by the National Park Service at sites in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania. \nRodney A. SUMMARY:Wellness Group - James L. Griffith Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:WELLNESS GROUP \nPracticing Hope: Countering the Demoralization of Aging Monday\, July 11\, 12 pm EDT \nAging brings an accumulation of pains\, disabilities\, threats from disease\, traumas to bear and losses to mourn. Yet\, study after study shows that the elderly throughout the world report greater well-being than their teen-age or mid-life counterparts. Sustaining a posture of hope\, rather than falling into despair\, is key to well-being as one ages. As a psychiatric educator\, James L. Griffith (’13) has translated psychological and neuroscience research into practical\, teachable methods for helping patients and families sustain a posture of hope despite ongoing threats\, losses and stressors that may be uncontrollable. Griffith will describe how hope is best regarded as a practice: “something you do” rather than “something you feel.” \nGriffith is professor and chair in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the GWU School of Medicine and Health Sciences. As a psychiatric educator\, he developed the GWU psychiatry residency training\, distinguished for its excellence in cultural psychiatry\, global mental health and psychosocial care for medically ill patients. \nMarcel I. Horowitz (’05) Wellness Group
